Medications at School
Administering Medication at School
A significant number of school children have health problems that require the administration of medication during the school day. Medication will only be administered to students when it is prescribed by a physician. Forms can be obtained on the link below or in the office and must be completed and signed by the attending physician signed by the parent, and returned to school. We must have this completed form before any medication can be dispensed at school. Over the counter medication such as Tylenol, Aspirin, Cough Drops, any homeopathic and Herbal remedies, etc. will not be administered without doctor’s permission.
We recommend that antibiotics that must be taken three times a day or less be administered at home. If it is necessary for a child to receive medication during the school day, the parent must bring the medication to school in it’s original labeled container. Children are not permitted to transport any medications on their person or backpack, nor are they allowed to bring medications on the school bus. Please remember to pick up your child’s medication at the end of the school year. Any medication that is not picked up by an adult, at school, by the last day will be disposed of. If you have any questions please contact the office or the school nurse.
Attached please find Forms to be filled out by physician and signed by parent to administer medication.
-Under current Colorado law, school officials are not allowed to administer medication of any kind. This includes over the counter medications as well. Parents have three options in arranging for their child to receive medication while at school.
- Obtain a district medication form (available at the link below) from the school office prior to visiting your doctor and have him/her complete the form indicating the drug, dose, time to be taken, and have them sign it. After affixing your signature please return the form and medication to the school office. Parents must handle all medications and its transportation both to and from school. The medication must be in its original container with the prescription attached. Authorized school officials will lock the medicine up and sign off as the student takes his/her medication.
- You may come to school and administer the medication to your child.
- You may discuss with your doctor an alternate schedule so that the medication may be administered outside of school hours.
NOTE: Please do not send ANY medications to school with your child (including over-the-counter allergy meds, Tylenol, aspirin, cough drops, etc).
